What kind of books are eligible for rebinding?
We can rebind a wide variety of books including softbound and hardbound literature, notebooks, journals, religious publications, trade publications, and more.
All books must meet the following requirements:
- No loose leaf books. All books must already be either softbound or hardbound.
- Under 10″ in height and 8″ in width. Any books that exceed those dimensions may still be eligible for rebinding but please contact us first before you submit an order to verify.
Books sent to us that do not meet these requirements or that do not have an order number attached will incur a fee to be returned. Any books that are sent to us without first placing an order may be discarded after 6 months.
What is the rebinding process?
We use traditional and modern techniques to rebind softbound and factory hardbound books into special editions.
This includes adding cotton headbands, bookmark ribbons, spine reinforcements, wrapping hardboards in bookcloth or artisan paper, and pressing the book until the glue dries and the book is stable.
Our process may involve trimming a very small amount (less than 1mm) of the edges to get a nice clean surface.
The rebinding process typically takes 1-3 business days depending on complexity. Some collections may require a book to be pressed for longer to ensure that the boards remain straight.
How are bookmark ribbons attached?
All books come with a standard bookmark ribbon with a color that coordinates with the book design. If no bookmark charm is requested, the ribbon is attached to the top of the book. If a bookmark charm is requested, the ribbon is attached to the bottom of the book so that the bookmark charm can hang from the top.
If you do not want a bookmark ribbon attached, please leave a comment in the order form.
How should I properly care for and maintain my books?
We use premium archival bookbinding materials to ensure that the book lasts as long as possible. These include pigment inks, acid free paper, and renaissance wax.
Our wood panel collections feature intricate designs that may be more susceptible to damage if the book is not cared for properly. Do not bend the hardcover or place heavy weight on the book.
Keep books out of direct sunlight if possible.
Can I combine multiple books into one hardcover edition?
Yes! We can combine multiple books into one edition. Books must be the exact same height and width and must not exceed 2-1/2″ in thickness. Use our Custom Projects form to describe your project.
Can I request a specific edition?
Yes! When using our design center, there is a comment section at the end of the form allowing you to request a specific edition to be rebound.
What if my book is damaged during the rebinding process?
Very rarely a book may be slightly damaged during the rebinding process. If so, we will replace the book, if possible, with a new book of the same edition at no additional cost.
Can any part of my book text be copied?
No. Authors and publishers maintain the copyright to their works which cannot be altered or reproduced.
Our service can only rebind a physical book from our inventory or a used book from your library into a new hardcover edition according to the First Sale Doctrine of the United States. Please see legal notice below for more information.

Everly & Loft operates within the boundaries of the law, specifically under the protections offered by the First Sale Doctrine of the United States. This doctrine, codified in 17 U.S.C. § 109, provides the legal framework that allows the lawful owner of a copy of a copyrighted work to sell, lend, or otherwise dispose of that copy without requiring permission from the copyright holder.
Everly & Loft provides a valuable service by offering to rebind books that are legally owned. This service is essential for preserving the longevity and usability of books, especially those that are rare, out-of-print, or hold significant personal or historical value to their owners. The rebinding process does not involve creating additional copies or otherwise infringing upon the exclusive rights of the copyright holder; it merely enhances the aesthetic appeal and durability of the existing copy that the lawful owner possesses.
Moreover, Everly & Loft’s activities encourage the continued appreciation and use of physical books in an era where digital media is increasingly dominant. By extending the life of these books, Everly & Loft helps to maintain the cultural and educational value embedded in these physical texts, contributing to the broader public good.
It is important to recognize that the First Sale Doctrine explicitly supports the rights of consumers to modify and repair their legally acquired property. Rebinding is a form of repair and customization that falls squarely within these rights. Therefore, Everly & Loft’s operations are fully compliant with U.S. copyright law and are aligned with the principles of promoting accessibility, preservation, and respect for the rights of lawful owners of copyrighted works.
In conclusion, Everly & Loft respectfully asserts that its rebinding services are legally sound under the First Sale Doctrine. The company remains committed to upholding the rights of book owners, supporting the preservation of literary works, and contributing to the enrichment of our cultural heritage through its specialized services.
